Third annual National rating of higher educational institutions of Russia, prepared on the basis of performance in 2011/2012 academic year, was presented by Interfax and the radio station "Echo of Moscow"

The main purpose of this project, which began in December 2009, is to develop mechanisms and procedures for an independent evaluation of Russian universities and their programs, stimulate competition for the growth of "intellectual capitalization" of Russian universities, and make them more competitive on the world educational and research scale.

The National rating for 2011-2012 academic year includes 105 universities, including 76 traditional universities and 29 national research universities. The rating of universities is topped by Lomonosov Moscow State University.

The authors of the National university rating traditionally compose an annual rating of "industry" universities. This year, they created a rating of universities that are in the area of responsibility of the country‘s transport agencies. The rating comprises 20 universities and is topped by the Moscow State University of Railway Engineering (MIIT).

Universities were evaluated using six key parameters:

  • educational activities;
  • research activities;
  • socialization (reflects universities' activities in the social sphere);
  • internationalization or international activities of universities;
  • university brand;
  • commercialization (universities‘ achievements in the sphere of innovations and commercialization of their developments).
The weight of the first two parameters was evaluated by the authors of the rating at 0.2 points for each university and the weight of the other parameters was 0.15.

The evaluation was conducted on the basis of information contained in questionnaires filled out by representatives of the universities, public information posted by universities on their official sites, and several information systems including those of Rospatent, Roststat, and the text information database SCAN.
