Pokholkov Yury Petrovich

Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor,
Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the Russian Federation,
President of the Association for Engineering Education of Russia,
Head of Department of Organization and Technology of Higher Professional Education of National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU)

He was born on April 13, 1939, in Irkutsk.

He is the graduate of Electromechanical Faculty of Tomsk Polytechnic Institute (TPI) with degree on Electrical Insulation and cable technology (1961). He defended dissertations for the academic degrees: Candidate of Technical Sciences, in TPI Academic Council (1966), Doctor of Technical Sciences, in Special Council of Moscow Power Engineering Institute (1978).

He is the expert in the field of Materials Science, Reliability of Electrical Machines, Organisation and Technology of Higher Professional Education.

He has been working in Tomsk Polytechnic University since 1961: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, Deputy Dean, Head of Department (1968-1970, 1977-1990), Faculty Dean (1978-1981), Vice-Rector for Research (1981-1990), Rector of Tomsk Polytechnic University (1990-2008), Head of Department of Organisation and Technology of Higher Professional Education (from 2007).

With his participation and under his leadership Tomsk Polytechnic Institute in 1991 was transformed into Tomsk Polytechnic University that in 1997 was included into the List of Most Valuable Objects of Cultural Heritage of the peoples of Russia, and in 2007 won the Competition of Innovative and Educational Programmes of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation with the programme “Advanced Training of World-Class Elite Specialists and Teams of Professionals on Priority Directions of Science, Engineering and Technology”.

  • Vice-President of the Association for Engineering Education of Russia (1995-1999);
  • President of the Association for Engineering Education of Russia (1999 – present);
  • Chairman of the Tomsk regional branch of the All-Russian Public Organisation "Knowledge Society» (2001-2007). Since 2007 - Honorary Chairman TRBPO "Knowledge Society";
  • Secretary of the Public Chamber of the Tomsk oblast (2006 -2011);
  • Member of the Administrative Council of the European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education (ENAEE) (1999 – present).

He was awarded the Diploma of the Best Manager of Russia (2001). He has the UICEE International Silver Badge of Honour for outstanding contribution to the development of engineering education (1999). Honorary Doctor of Heriot-Watt University (Scotland, 2007), Honorary Professor of Jilin University (China, 2006). He was awarded the Grand Gold Medal of Technical University in Prague (Czech Republic, 2007), the Medal of Johann Josef Ritter von Prehtl (Vienna University of Technology, Austria, 2009).

He is the author of more than 230 scientific publications, monographs, patents and inventions. More than 30 Candidates and Doctors of Sciences were prepared under the leadership of Y.P. Pokholkov.
